Cattle drive of course!
|The ranch work is seasonal.
In april the calves are born, in mai/june they will be branded.
July and august are lazy month - here and there an escaped steer is to bring back, a small cattle drive to another pasture has to be made, a horse is searched. The rest of time is used for long interesting horseback rides.
A lot of work starts in september: all steers have to be caught - this is the big "Round up" which last till october.
There is no horseback riding in november - hunting season. Only a person who is tired of life dares to go outside when these good armed people shoot at white tails and antelopes.
The wintertime is coming afterwards - a time only for hardboiled people (or eskimos). Till now the Lake Ranch hadn't a winter season ... ;-)
Out of context:
The tenderfoot thought he could ride, so he mounted the pony. A moment later he painfully picked himself out of the dust in one corner of the corral.
"Man, oh man," he said, "but she bucked something fierce."
"Bucked?" said a nearby cowboy, "She only coughed!"
